Last Saturday, October 22, 2005 LEEP completed the 2nd
Strategic Planning Session for the upcoming year. We had a
strong attendance Todd Chas, Toni Reale, Christopher Inglese, Mario
Inglese, Carmen Nash, Jennifer Godwin, James Powell, Jacquie Shapo,
Andrea Glover, Anne Goold, Andonia Mckinney, Ian Downie, Mike Martin.
Andrea Glover is school administrator at CDA
Andonia Mckinney is a teacher in 8 area schools
Anne Goold is the former owner of Coastal Expeditions
James Powell, and Jacquie Shapo are scientist at the Ft. Johnson Marine Lab
Carmen Nash worked for NOAA and passionate about environmental education
Jenifer Godwin is a student at the college of Charleston with teaching expirience
Mike Martin is musician with expirience in putting together music festivals
We did a breif overview of LEEP and the last meeting and then broke off into
committees. As always, I was very pleased to see the leadership and initiative
that took place amongst our members. The grants committee and technology
committee combined and made some very good progress according to thier feed back.
I was part of the programs committee chaired by Toni Reale. The program committee
discussed designing a series of programs around water quality issues that would
incorporate the SC standards into several hand-on classroom courses and outdoor field
trips using the resources available to us.
The diversity of the group brought a wide range of objectives and we were able to
come up with an exciting plan for the future of LEEP.
Ian Downie went right to work in the next several days improving our technology
communications. We are seeing daily improvements in our website with Todd and IanD
working together.
Fundraising/events committee was not present but Sandra did submit a report on what
she would like to see in the future. She and I discussed a possible calendar for activities
in each month from now until April.
We all left again with new vigor for the future.

We are so happy to have the opportunity to work with MESSA! We were just talking about you over the weekend at our strategic planning session. There were school administrators, teachers, scientist, volunteers, and the core LEEP team in attendance. The programs committee, headed by Toni Reale, has decided to design thier first series of programs focusing on water quality. One of the schools that we service is nearby Brittlebank park, (The Charleston Developemental Academy,CDA). Wether we recieved the 8K for H20 proceeds or not, we were planning to contact MESSA anyway to tie in your activities at the park with our curricullum at the school. We are designing a series of in classroom programs and outdoor field trips that will all be water quality related. Several of the people in attendance mentioned working together with MESSA. This will also tie into our Education Kayak Expedition.

I am pleased to inform you that LEEP will be the 2006 recipient for MESSA’s 8K for H20 proceeds. MESSA is excited about the opportunity to work with your organization in the coming months. Is there a time next week when we can meet to discuss race?
I will also need to obtain a copy of SC LEEP’s logo for our website.
Congratulations!
Jenn
Don’t Forget the Film Festival this Tueday, 10/25/05 at the Downtown Charleston Library 4pm.
Today is Wednesday 10/26/05.
We have taken some more steps forward in the organization. I spoke to Jennifer Godwin earlier this week. She has agreed to come in and volunteer a few days a week. We meet for the first time this Thursday.
I was able to get a hold of a friend of mine, Darlin, who has expirience working with non-profits and is a great person. She also agreed to come to the office this thursday as a possible office manager/staff member. With both of these ladies and myself working we are starting to develop a staff. Yeah! We need the help.
Toni, Adam, and myself had a chance to see Todd at the Film Festival on Tuesday. Extremely inspiring films, especialy “Endagered Species” about a non-profit conservation group that works with inner city kids in Washington DC. Marcella was also there.
Toni and James met that evening. The reports were that they had a great meeting and were able to outline a whole series of programs that has to do with Wetlands. They will present it at Toni’s house Thursday evening at the Potluck. I am delighted to see the committees taking action!
On a sadder note…I have had 3 people close to me lose a loved one in the last week… One very dear to LEEP. I cannot pretend to understand what they must be going through. We can only send them our love and our prayers.
Today I read some more of the SC standards and began to rewrite a program to be taught at CDA next week. I also worked for the SC Aquarium and was able to get a look at some of their education programs. There may be possibilities for joint-ventures.
Tuesday I worked with Coastal Expeditions and Kiawah outdoor program to do a team building adventure race for 135 executives form Oracle. I was able to speak with a former park ranger from Congaree Swamp and get some information about the area.
We are assembling the team for the kayak expedition in the next few weeks. I have decided to break it up into two seperate scouting trips for November. Starting around the 13th-18th. Then again over the Thanks Giving Week. My goal is to learn about the areas, interview many different people, scout the river, and write a great program script to be filmed and cut into a documentary and broadcast throught the web to the classrooms. The actual tour may be scheduled for late February. It will be used as a way of getting publicity and raising funds as well.
Love to all,
IanS
Today is October 29, 2005
We have some more developements in the right direction…
Jennifer Godwin came to the office on Thursday and helped out with updating the data base. I had a discussion with IanD about etapestry. We have decided to use Outlook for the time being becuase it is more compatible and can be synched with various applications. We may use etapestry in the future. Jennifer was able to enter a good portion of our mailing lists and we are developing a system of tracking and following up with important contacts.
The program committee met at Tonis house. James Powell, Jacquie Shapo, Anne Goold, Reagen Powell, and myself were in attendence. James was able to present his proposed learning cycle as well as several ideas about brainstorming and implementing. Toni had printed up several programs from “Project Wet” to correlate with the cycle. I was very pleased with what I saw. They realy put a lot of effort into it. The feedback from all in attendance was helpful in creating a plan for the series of programs to be presented to CDA as a test school.
Friday Morning Toni and walked the route from Brittlebank to CDA to work out more details of the next class that I will teach on water cyle and wetlands this Monday. We were able to come up with several ideas. When we reached CDA Cecilia Rogers, (Director) happened to see us and invited us in for a tour of the school. It was great to see the kids and listen to Cecilias vision and passion for the school. They are all extremely grateful and supportive to us.
We managed to map out a good route and make a plan for Monday.
