Off to Dreher Island
Today I am paddling away from Lake Murray to camp at Dreher Island State. At the park I will meet Chief Louis Chavez of the Pee Dee Nation. He is the chief of the Beaver Creek Indians tribe. His ancestors were raised on the Edisto river and he will give us insights into the river from a Native American perspective. I look forward to meeting him and hearing about the practical and spiritual connections the native inhabitants have with our powerful rivers.

Pee Dee Nation History
We are theĀ Pee Dee Indians, Our ancestors were some of the Indians that Juan Pardo met in 1560 when he was exploring the interior of what is now the state of South Carolina. Our ancestors lived along the Big Pee Dee River, Which got it’s name from our people. Click here for more information on the Pee Dee Nation.
