The Outdoor Classroom
Today I paddled to Saluda Shoals park in Columbia to meet a school group from Nursery Road Elementary. The classes showed up at the park courtesy of the LEEP bio-diesel bus. Helpful rangers Jay and Samantha showed us the unique plants of the park and Bert Cupts gave the students an overview of bio-diesel. Later I covered standards based questions related to the Web of Water. We talked and sang about the rock cycle, the water cycle, and the plant cycle. Nature is such a wonderful classroom. As I continue this kayak journey through South Carolina it is a great honor to work with rangers and other advocates for mother nature. By getting outside and into the natural world we all get first hand lessons in a fun way. Tomorrow we paddle to Congaree National Park to meet with naturalists and film on the beautiful old growth flood plain.
