On March 13th LEEP had the opportunity to meet with the Governor’s Education Policy Advisor, Ashlei Stevens in Columbia. We were able to talk with her about issues concerning children getting outdoors more often. Topics such as childhood obesity, the No Child Left Inside Act and the Environmental Education Alliance were discussed. Ms. Stevens suggested that LEEP reach out to some of the charter schools across the state that have internet classrooms. Many of these children who take classes online are unable to get involved in sports and other outdoor activities due to the fact that most public schools will not allow them to participate. LEEP could aid this problem by organizing classes that would require these children to get outside and explore their local environments. LEEP could also help by arranging quarterly or monthly events that would enable these children to get outdoors, such as kayaking or hiking trips. This would be a great way to bring these students together so they may be able to meet other local kids who take these cyber classes as well.
